Cubs can't cash in on opportunities, lose to Cardinals 4-2

"The pitch to Diaz was a fastball that returned over the plate," Hammel said. "The pitch to Moss I backtracked and took a gander at it and I felt I made my pitch and it simply left the yard. I must make sense of how to keep it on the ground."

Dexter Fowler opened the amusement with a grand slam against Garcia. It was his seventh leadoff homer of the season.

"I'm seeing the ball well," Fowler said. "Control what you can control and other than that you must continue pushing."

"I let my group down," Garcia said. "I've been through intense times some time recently. Whatever I can say is I'm going to keep on doing what's in my control to keep on fighting."

Greenery entered the amusement buried in a 1-for-41 slip. He singled in the second and scored on Diaz's fifteenth homer of the season.

"It was an awful groove, yet he pulled himself through," Cardinals director Mike Matheny said.

Diaz began interestingly since July 31, when the All-Star shortstop broke his thumb.

Kevin Siegrist got his second spare.

The misfortune implies the soonest the Cubs can secure their first National League Central Division title since 2008 would be Thursday against Milwaukee at Wrigley Field.
